Most newcomers do not realize the autoflowering trait comes from Cannabis ruderalis, a hardy subspecies from Siberia and Central Asia. Breeders crossed it into indica and sativa lines so the plant flowers on age rather than light hours. There is a clear write up on how much ruderalis remains in modern crosses at https://turboautoflowerseeds.com which explains why some strains stay tiny while others stretch. Older autos were weak on potency, but that gap has closed a lot in the last decade.
